  1. In medicine, condition where the body's 
  2. immune responses are mobilized not against 
  3. `foreign' matter, such as invading germs, but
  4. against the body itself.  Diseases considered
  5. to be of autoimmune origin include myasthenia
  6. gravis, pernicious anaemia, rheumatoid 
  7. arthritis, and lupus erythematosus.
  8. In autoimmune diseases T-lymphocytes
  9. reproduce to excess to home in on a target
  10. (properly a foriegn disease-causing
  11. molecule); however, molecules of the body's
  12. own tissue that resemble the target may also
  13. be attacked, for example insulin-producing
  14. cells, resulting in insulin-dependent
  15. diabetes; if certain joint membrane cells are
  16. attached, then rheumatoid arthritis may
  17. result; and if myelin, the basic protein of
  18. the nervous system, then multiple sclerosis. 
  19. In 1990 in Israel a T-cell vaccine was
  20. produced that arrests the excessive
  21. reproduction of T-lymphocytes attacking
  22. healthy target tissues.
